Alternatives to BloggerBlogger was chosen for this course for several reasons. Some of those include ease of use including accessibility of login, it is part of Google suit of tools, it allows students and teachers to take their ideas beyond the classroom. It allows for greater collaboration between individuals such as the example of the 9-11 blog project.
While I think Blogger is a great product, I wanted to share a few alternatives Kidblog (recently went to paid version) Edublog Google Sites (blog page) Weebly Wix About.me WordPress The good and bad of the alternatives Kidblog and Edublog allow for teacher controls to help guide and monitor students in the process. Google Sites allows for the creation of a blog page(s) within the site. The drawbacks of these are that at least Kidblog isn't free, and if you want students to own their work, I don't know if the students are able to truly take the blog with them when they graduate. This final point wouldn't likely stop me from using the blogs, especially with younger students because of the ability to manage student accounts. The others are great for professional blogs and I use all but WordPress because there is more behind the scenes work to make it look the way you want. We have had issue with using these with students because they are public and students can search the site for content that is non-educational. In the end you have to choose what works best for you, and also be open to what suits your students needs the best. Some may already have blogs or sites that they could incorporate a blog into. |
